Давид Федорович родился 20 июля 1940 года в Москве. Отец – Федор Давидович Тухманов, армянин по национальности, по профессии инженер, но, как отмечал сам Тухманов, он обладал прекрасными вокальными данными, пел арии из опер и делал это очень талантливо. Отец композитора происходил из донских армян, родился и вырос в Ростове-на-Дону. Настоящая их фамилия - Туманян. Композитора назвали в честь армянского деда. Дальним родственником Давид Тухманов приходится и самому Ованесу Туманяну - классику армянской литературы.
Мать - Вера Карасева - музыкант, она привила Давиду любовь к сочинению мелодий и к музыке в целом – сначала занималась с ним сама с раннего возраста, развивала его талант, потом отдала в музыкальную школу, а затем в государственный институт имени Гнесиных, пишет 24smi.org. В детстве Давид Федорович был непоседливым ребенком. Вместо многочасового труда по разучиванию гамм он выбегал во двор играть с ребятами в разные мальчишеские игры. Однако талант помогал ему с самого начала – для ребенка, который в 4 года написал первое произведение для исполнения на фортепиано, да на две руки, не было непреодолимой трудностью подготовиться к уроку.
Творческий путь Давид Тухманов начал с составления музыкальных композиций для исполнения на фортепиано. Затем он стал автором лирических мелодий и аранжировок к уже знаменитым хитам. Отслужив в армии, он стал работать в популярном жанре и сочинять мелодии к текстам для исполнения на эстраде.
Сочиненные им хиты исполняли лучшие из лучших – Александр Градский, Валерия, Иосиф Кобзон, Олег Митяев, Лев Лещенко, Валерий Леонтьев, София Ротару, ансамбль "Веселые ребята" и другие знаменитые исполнители и группы. Путь к общенародной любви у Давида Тухманова начался со знаменитой песни "Последняя электричка", которая мгновенно стала шлягером. Вершиной же творчества в этом направлении стала композиция "День Победы", которая прошла долгий путь - от запрещенной в эфире композиции до звания главной песни России в праздник 9 Мая. Тухманов написал ее в 1975 году. Песню поначалу не хотели брать на радио и телевидение, считая ее излишне танцевальной. Однако Лев Лещенко все же исполнил песню на концерте ко Дню милиции. Песня "День Победы" мгновенно стала популярной. Давид Тухманов также является автором таких известных и любимых слушателями песен, как "Эти глаза напротив", "Кони в яблоках", "Чистые пруды" и многих других.
Тухманов создал несколько мюзиклов, писал музыку для детских ансамблей и спектаклей. В области камерной музыки им созданы циклы баллад и романсов, оперы "Екатерина Великая" (2005) и "Царица" (2009). Давид Федорович сочинил не один десяток композиций и для фильмов.
За свою деятельность композитор отмечен многими наградами. Давид Тухманов – народный артист России, заслуженный деятель искусств РСФСР, лауреат Премии Ленинского Комсомола, Государственной премии РФ, кавалер почетного знака Российского Фонда Общественного Признания, член Патриаршего совета по культуре. Тухманов награжден орденами Дружбы Народов и "За заслуги перед Отечеством" IV степени.
Композитор уверен, что главное в песне – это не продуманность, потраченные время и усилия, главное – чтобы она звучала легко, чтобы несла в себе заряд положительных эмоций.
